General description
The Tn antigen is a truncated O-glycan, which is commonly seen in colorectal cancer (CRC). It is usually expressed at high levels in cancer cells. The Tn antigen is small in size and simple in structure. It has a non-physiological glucan structure in humans, so it can be identified as foreign by the immune system.
Biochemical / Physiological Actions
The Tn antigen stimulates metastasis of colorectal cancer by activating the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, mediated by H-Ras. It acts as a precursor to several important complex O-glycans. Subpopulations of blood cells in all lineages that carry the Tn antigen result in a hematologic disorder called Tn syndrome.
